Enjoying the Spring Weather

Today is a day to get things done around the house, so I don’t mind that it looks like this outside:

Another reason I don’t mind is that I know for a fact that Spring is a reality and not just a far off dream. In fact, last week we had a few days in a row of gorgeous weather! We got to go out to the park and have fun on the playground, and jackets aren’t even a necessity! It’s great having one just a couple blocks away.

Sleep Milestone

Right now I am lying in bed, excited about the fact that I just had a third night in a row of not having to get up to put Calvin back to sleep! He has only ever gone two nights in a row and only 4 or 5 times in his whole short life. I haven’t been concerned or wondered how to fix it, but I think I stumbled upon the answer anyhow.

On Sunday evening when I put him to bed, I could tell he was a little restless for a few minutes after I closed the door. So a couple hours later, when I was ready for bed and when I knew he would be fast asleep, I went back into him room just to make sure he was still under his blankets. He wasn’t, and he was also bunched into a corner, so I readjusted him in the center of his crib and covered him with his blankets. He slept soundly the whole night long!

I repeated this action on Monday night and had another success. So at this point, either we just had another random two nights in a row, or I was on to something. Last night I did it again. He had been asleep when I put him in the crib, but when I went back to check, he was in the corner again, uncovered. I had no clue he moved around so much in the first moments of bed time! He rarely makes any noise when I put him to bed.

So what I am realizing is that he would either wake up cold from being uncovered, or if he had manoeuvred himself to the corner then later on moved again, he would bonk the side and wake up.

So it looks like we have a slightly new bed time routine! Now if only my body wasn’t used to waking up in the night, we would be golden.

One Year of Calvin

It’s already been a year. What?!

A year ago, at 10:14 PM on Friday April 13, 2012, Calvin William joined our family at a long and lean 7lb2oz and 21.25″, and he has been the best baby ever! Excuse me while I take a moment to brag here…

Calvin has always been a generally happy baby, quick to smile and very slow to get sad or angry. He kept my laundry piles small by not spitting up much and peeing during diapers changes no more than 5 times in his whole life! No PeePee Teepees needed here! I think the last time he did it, he aimed at his mouth, so he decided it’s better just to hold it until I am done. Sure, he still doesn’t sleep through the night, but I don’t care. He never gives a fight when it’s bed time, and wakes up chatty and happy in the morning. It has been so much fun seeing how much there is for him to learn, and watching him actually learn it! In the past few months it has been especially fun with him becoming more interactive, sharing toys and trying to feed me his food. Currently he is in a copy cat phase, mimicking head movements, actions and sounds.

And what is a one year post without a pile of photos depicting everything he has done up until now? Nothing! So without further ado, sit back and enjoy!

Calvin Quickie: Play

Calvin has been enjoying his gift. He mostly sucks on the pieces and bangs them together, but when daddy is playing with him, he helps by giving him a piece to use. That’s his newest thing: giving things away. Then he wants it right back of course. It’s a fun game called Give and Take!

At Tim’s request, here is a photo of his towers. He is obviously getting more use of Calvin’s gift than Calvin is.

Calvin’s Birthday Present

Tim and I are not huge gift givers. We didn’t get Calvin a Christmas present, and were thinking that we wouldn’t get him a birthday present either because really, how does a one year old know what a gift is and miss it if he doesn’t get one? Money saved!

But I was at our local Goodwill thrift store and came across a bunch of bags and boxes of Mega Blocks and thought that would be a great toy for Calvin. So for $11, a grabbed a large box and a medium sized bag and took them home.

Of course I had to clean them, and originally thought I would just throw them in the dishwasher, but I didn’t have any mesh bags to keep them contained. So after a quick Google search, I discovered that the washing machine works just as well! So I divided up the pieces into four pillow cases, and then into the washer they went, on a hot cycle.

When it was completed, I just laid the pieces all out on some towels to air dry.

I didn’t have a basket big enough to fit all of the roughly 160 pieces, so I picked out the best ones, and now they are ready for play!

And that is how gifts work in the Sevenhuysen house. What might be a random, everyday toy purchase by one family is a gift in ours.

Oh, and his birthday isn’t for another two weeks, but I’m sure he doesn’t care that he is getting it now and not later. I don’t want to have to keep them somewhere else just to “surprise” him on his actual birthday. I’ll save the surprising for when he actually knows what a birthday is.
