Half a Year Old

This was us 6 months ago:

Calvin was a little 7lb 2oz newborn. Now he is somewhere well over 20lbs! October 13 marked half a year of him being in our lives, which is pretty crazy! He is a happy boy learning new things all the time. Some of his most recent accomplishments are:

– He can go from sitting to on his tummy in 2 seconds.

Gonna crawl soon?

– He can say “mamamama”. He never stops after just 2 syllables.

– He won a blue ribbon for his toe jam.

– He is getting better at sleeping through more of the night. And sometimes he sleeps in funny positions.

Of course the flash from the first photo woke him up, but this is how I found him sleeping!

– Sitting on Daddy’s shoulders is the one thing he has enjoyed for the longest amount of time. Everything else he enjoys comes and goes too quickly.

– And his biggest accomplishment, but by far the easiest, is being our most favourite little boy ever!

I thought it would be fun to make a half a birthday cake, so I did! Tim thought it was “Really really really really good. Really good.” I used the recipe from Mennonite Girls Can Cook, but I halved the recipe.

A half a cake is a wonderful idea when there are only 2 of you to enjoy it!

We are looking forward to the next half a year when there is so much more for Calvin to learn. It’s gonna be fun!

Captain Hyper Diaper

Calvin is such a happy boy in the mornings. He could chat with himself in his crib for an hour if I left him that long, but I prefer sharing those fun moments with him.

Yesterday was Tim’s first Saturday of his working career, so he enjoyed hanging out with him in the morning. Together than came up with an alter ego for Calvin: Captain Hyper Diaper!

He needs to grow into his cape.

Calvin Eats Yams

If we hadn’t have been moving, I probably would have started to feed Calvin solids a while ago. So far I have let him suck on fruits and veggies though. His favourites are apples and snap peas!

But last night I decided to cook up a yam for him. I puréed it with a little milk, and away we went!

We should get a high chair.

And now there are lots of leftovers in the freezer for him to enjoy! Next up…perhaps some broccoli? What did your baby enjoy eating?

These Ain’t Your Victorian Bunnies

Yesterday as I was loading Calvin into the car to run some errands, I saw a little movement and this guy popped out of a bush.

(taken on my phone)

I was thinking of how very different it was from the bunnies you find around Victoria. The bunnies have their little bum bob up and down while they hop around. But this rabbit, his big legs lifted his whole back end high up into the air. It reminded me of some sort of machinery, and it took me a while to think of what it was. Then it came to me. It reminded me of a jack. Yes. I am a genius.

First Snow

I thought we just entered Fall. But this morning Tim texted me from his walk to the LRT saying it was snowing. What is it about snow, even a tiny bit of it, that feels so magical?

Does that feeling go away after seeing it so often?

Starting to stick!

I think I am really going to enjoy this big window through the winter.

Thanksgiving

This year I am ever so thankful for old friends. When Thanksgiving rolled around, we had been in town for a mere two days, but were invited to two different Thanksgiving dinners!

The first was with family friends of Tim’s family. We had actually stayed with them a year ago when we came to town to visit Jordan. They live quite close to the river so we went for a little walk after lunch.

The second dinner was hosted by an old high school friend of mine. The food was delicious and the company was fun!

We definitely don’t feel alone out here, and for that we feel truly blessed.

Fixing Our Place

The photos Tim originally sent me looked like this place was in good condition, but what can you really see in an iPhone photo anyway? When I walked through our front door, I was a little disappointed. There were tons of nicks in the walls, outlet covers were broken or missing, the same with vent covers. The fridge was dirty, and under the stove was disgusting. A curtain rod was half hanging off the wall and another was done up strangely. I was not very happy. And yes, I did have a moment when it was all overwhelming and had a little cry. But I knew I would do that at some point, maybe in bed the first night, but it happened when Amy, my brother-in-law’s girlfriend handed me a house warming plant.

Thank the Lord for in-laws! Tim’s mom got right to work scrubbing out the stove and his dad made a list of everything that needed to be fixed and ran to Home Depot to pick up supplies. It took less than two days, and it feels 100% better. So much like a place I can call home. If only I could paint the walls a lighter colour.

Getting my spackle on. It’s fun!

Have you had any unexpected things when you moved somewhere new?
