Watching Some Soccer

Tim’s brother, Jordan, is a pretty big soccer fan, so when the Vancouver Whitecaps came to town, of course he wanted to go watch! We tagged along, and I enjoyed watching my first professional soccer match. Calvin enjoyed his very first professional sporting event of any kind!

It was a little chilly, being an outdoor stadium, but we had blankets and we were fine. I don’t know if I can say the same thing for the 40% of the crowd that was teenaged girls wearing leggings as pants.

We had lots of fun, and Vancouver even won! Hooray!

Family Photo of Four

Almost a year ago, on April 18 (I remember the date because it was Tim’s birthday), we took this little family photo while watching a Canucks playoff game:

We decided to replicate it this past weekend when my parents were here and we were dressed up similarly:

But we didn’t stop there. We had to make sure everybody was accounted for:

That’s right! We are bringing another little Canucks fan into this world, due October 21. You probably caught that fact in Calvin’s birthday post, but I couldn’t decide how to announce it, so I just did it both ways!

We are so excited! So is Calvin. He just doesn’t really know what he is excited about.

A Visit with Oma and Grandpa

Last Wednesday my parents arrived in town after a day of driving through the mountains. They brought with them some chocolate for a late Easter and some gifts for Calvin for an early birthday party. It is always fun to have guests, and family is the best kind of guests!

Here are a few photos of their visit.

Our First Family Day

This year, BC added a new winter holiday: Family Day. However we were not in BC to enjoy it. The good news is that it already was a holiday in Alberta! So even though we didn’t get to enjoy the first of a holiday, it was still a first for us.

Our day didn’t look much different than normal though. I washed diapers, Tim played video games. We hung out in the living room playing with Calvin. I made cookies, Tim wrote a story. I changed diapers, Tim didn’t. The only thing different was that we went grocery shopping together! Yay family! And then for an extra different thing, we treated ourselves to some Tim Hortons (yes, it really is a treat; I don’t think we have gone there since we moved here). And lo and behold, Roll Up the Rim is here! It was a nice surprise. And our treat to ourselves expanded because both of our cups were winners! One free coffee, one free donut. Yay!

And that was our family day. No fancy outings. We have limited imaginations when it comes to thinking of stuff to do. That may make our lives seem boring to some people, but I like it. And I like my family.

Here’s to a four day week!

A Sevenhuysen Christmas

On Boxing day we once again hit the road (which unfortunately included a ferry ride) to head to the Island where Tim’s family is. We made a quick stop at their home in Nanaimo before heading out with everybody toward Mackenzie Beach Resort in Tofino. Tim’s parents booked the same cabin we rented a couple years ago in the fall, so it was kind of nice to have a familiar place to spend Christmas. If it isn’t at home, it may as well be somewhere you’ve been before! I was the first outsider to join their Christmases two years ago, and this year Amy joined us on the 27th when we all exchanged our gifts.

We spent three days there, and most of it was spent lounging around, playing games or going for walks on the beach.

A Thiessen Christmas

We left Edmonton in the evening of December 19th and arrived in Langley just in time for dinner the next day. The first six days of our Christmas vacation officially began!

We were able to attend my niece’s Christmas pageant at her preschool. She had the part of Mary and said her one line very well. It was such a cute little production, and everything a Christmas event at a preschool should be.

The next thing on the agenda was the Janzen extended gathering at our family cabin at Hatzic Lake. The cabin recently underwent some renovations to open the living space up, but we still seem to be bursting at the seams! It is always fun to catch up with my cousins and see how their own little guys are growing up so fast.

We had a fun round of a White Elephant gift exchange, involving some pretty ridiculous items. I liked what I ended up with though, a set of navy curtains that makes Calvin’s room look more like it belongs to a boy than a gender neutral baby.

At one point Tim had this lovely banana suit, but it was snatched out his hands quite quickly. What a sad day.

Since Darren brought Chelsea to our family Christmas for the first time I dunno, 9 or 10 years ago, we have switched up the days we celebrate together as a family. Every other year we do Christmas day, switched with Christmas Eve the other years. This year we had Christmas Day. Most of the family was there in the morning for a yummy breakfast (even Rosie’s new fiance and his son!) and then everybody else joined in the afternoon for a little while all together before Mark and Isaac were due at his parents’ place. Fun times were had and good food was enjoyed by all.

Isaac had to remove his Batman mask because it was scaring Calvin, but I think he will get over it and they will be great friends.

A Package From My Oma

A couple weeks ago, my Oma called me to let me know she was going to send me a package of some special baking ingredients to make some delicious cookies. I made these cookies with her quite a few years back, but have not since then because they require some odd ingredients that are difficult to find. I was very excited she thought of me to send me the items.

Earlier this week, I got a call from a lady at a company called Flaman just south of Edmonton saying she had a package for me there, because apparently the address was wrong. We figured out the J in my postal code was replaced by a G (easily misunderstood for each other while giving my address over the phone). This lady was so great, she looked up my Oma’s phone number and called her to get my number so she could get my real address. If you need any kind of farming equipment, they seem like a good company to deal with…at least their administrative staff are.

I eventually got the package delivered to my door. Because my Oma cannot send a box that isn’t completely full, I also received a mug and some of my favourite sweets…Cow Candy! The ingredients that were the purpose of the package are Baking Ammonia and Peppermint Oil (not extract).

The recipe that called for these things is Peppermint Cookies (linked to my Oma’s recipe on Mennonite Girls Can Cook, where my aunt is a contributer; the page explains the use of the ammonia and oil). They were a favourite Christmas cookie of mine growing up, and I am excited to make them for myself now! I’ll probably make them next week sometime.

Do you have any favourite family recipes or recipes that require different ingredients?
