Mobility

Calvin is now mobile. However he can only push himself backwards and pivot on his belly, so I don’t think he really knows where he is going, or that he is even going somewhere. So then if be backs onto a leg of furniture and it is between his legs, he is rendered immobile and gets frustrated that he is stuck. Here are a couple places I have found him when I heard him whine.

Under the crib.

Under the laundry drying rack.

Of course the little goofball puts his pouts away and pulls out his smiles for the camera.

Baby Gadgets

I am not a huge gadget person. I like things streamlined and to have as little amount of stuff as possible so if it’s a tool that’s used for only one specific thing, I tend not to have it (unless it’s a waffle iron, because nothing else can do that!). However, I was gifted a few little items at my baby showers, two in particular had to do with feeding.

The first one was the Boon Spoon. I tried it once, and probably won’t again. It is a really neat idea, but you have to keep the spoon vertical the whole time, otherwise the food wouldn’t be close enough to the end to squirt out, and also, if Calvin decided to spit out a bunch of food, but I already had more on the spoon waiting, it was hard to scrape it all off his chin. I would not recommend this product.

The other I was reminded that I had when my Oma mentioned that when her children were little, she would wrap food in cheese cloth then tie it in a knot and they could suck on it. If I had cheese cloth on hand, I would probably do that, but I already had the modern day tool…the net feeder thing! I don’t know the brand or whatnot, but I’m sure there are many companies who make this sort of thing. It keeps Calvin busy for a good while, and he can feed himself that way! It does get a little messy when he decides to hit everything around him with it, but he is a baby eating; he is supposed to get messy! The net does get a little hard to clean if he has pulpy food in it, like oranges and even bananas, but I just throw it in the dishwasher, and if there is still food stuck in the seams, at least I know it’s clean!

Mmm…Banana!

I had to add this one too, because I love his facial expression!

Are you a gadgets person? What do you like? If you aren’t, what few ones do you have that you enjoy?

SH – A Visit with Jordan and Amy

While Tim is up in Fort McMurray on his business trip, I am completing a photo scavenger hunt he created for me to work through so I stay busy and he can get new photos of our boy.

Calvin beating up Uncle Jordan.

This morning Calvin and I went to the church that Tim’s brother, Jordan, attends. Afterwards we were invited over for lunch with Jordan and Amy. Of course things got a little out of control.

First, Calvin punched Uncle Jordan in the face…

…then he pinned him to the ground!

But of course he only had kind smiles for Amy.

SH – Calvin in the Snow

While Tim is up in Fort McMurray on his business trip, I am completing a photo scavenger hunt he created for me to work through so I stay busy and he can get new photos of our boy.

Calvin making a snow angel in his snow suit.

On Thursday is snowed what I consider a good amount. Probably between 4 and 6 inches. It is supposed to warm up in the next couple days, so before it disappeared, I thought I should get Calvin out there for his first real experience in the white fluff. He was incredibly emotionless and motionless the entire time.

Calvin Update – 6.5 Months

Calvin has been doing lots of learning these past few weeks! Here is what he is up to:

Pretty much getting on all fours! He isn’t quite mobile yet, but probably soon.

He tries really hard to reach things when he is sitting down, so sometimes I find him like this (just as I was typing this, I heard him get annoyed and looked behind me to see that he was trying to pull himself up on the post of the coffee table…just needs to figure out how to get his feet under him!):

He also learned how to open the coffee table drawer! I had to replace the PlayStation controllers with some toys. He thinks it’s so fun!

The other day he was sitting on the floor by the computer while I was making supper, and I looked over to find him making his first mess. I didn’t think I sat him down that close to the computer!

But one of the most fun things he is learning to do is crawl into my lap! I love it!

Calvin’s Spot

Calvin has been sitting for a while now, and it’s nice to be able to plop him into a high chair at restaurants and not worry about holding him and a fork and knife at the same time. Until now we haven’t had one at home, which wasn’t a problem until recently when he started eating. Sitting on the floor ain’t cuttin’ it. It’s hard to get a good spoon-to-mouth angle.

I’ve been looking around for a while for high chairs, but I am too picky. I don’t like those plush ones. I have enough laundry to do, never mind adding a high chair cover to it. Also, why would it need to recline? And as simple and easy to wipe down the IKEA ones are, they just aren’t my style. I’ve always liked the wooden one my mom has, and if she never had her grandchildren visit, I would’ve probably snuck it out of her kitchen. And then I saw this one on Kijiji! It is perfect!

All wood, small scale, and doesn’t take up a lot of floor real estate. It love it, and it suits Calvin me so well, don’t you think?

Calvin and his avocado mouth thinks it’s just dandy!

And now he has his own spot at the table and can enjoy looking at our faces while we eat too, instead of our calves. Also, he likes to pretend the table is a bongo. Multi-use!

Half a Year Old

This was us 6 months ago:

Calvin was a little 7lb 2oz newborn. Now he is somewhere well over 20lbs! October 13 marked half a year of him being in our lives, which is pretty crazy! He is a happy boy learning new things all the time. Some of his most recent accomplishments are:

– He can go from sitting to on his tummy in 2 seconds.

Gonna crawl soon?

– He can say “mamamama”. He never stops after just 2 syllables.

– He won a blue ribbon for his toe jam.

– He is getting better at sleeping through more of the night. And sometimes he sleeps in funny positions.

Of course the flash from the first photo woke him up, but this is how I found him sleeping!

– Sitting on Daddy’s shoulders is the one thing he has enjoyed for the longest amount of time. Everything else he enjoys comes and goes too quickly.

– And his biggest accomplishment, but by far the easiest, is being our most favourite little boy ever!

I thought it would be fun to make a half a birthday cake, so I did! Tim thought it was “Really really really really good. Really good.” I used the recipe from Mennonite Girls Can Cook, but I halved the recipe.

A half a cake is a wonderful idea when there are only 2 of you to enjoy it!

We are looking forward to the next half a year when there is so much more for Calvin to learn. It’s gonna be fun!
