About Larissa Sevenhuysen

Born and raised on the West Coast, I went from a single working girl there to a stay-at-home mom on the Prairies in 2.5 years. Life comes at you fast, and you just gotta go with it!

Directionless

The other day I ventured out to pick up the high chair I found on Kijiji. Being a part of town I had never been to before, like 95% of this city, I glanced at the general location on Google, then scribbled down the address to input into our hand-me-down GPS. Halfway there, the satellite cut out and I was directionless. Thankfully, since I had glanced at the map prior to leaving, I knew it was just north of the airport. From there I relied on the faithful grid system. It got me there with only one incorrectly guessed turn. The GPS started working again when I returned home, but cut out before I was halfway there, and it was dark by this point. I remembered the street I used to get me over the river on my way there, so I found that back with a lucky guess. From there it was a little easier since we live quite close to a main street.

All this to say, I am thankful for grid systems. They do not have this in Victoria. The streets have names, which can change from one block to the next! It would be hard to get around there without a map with you in the car, but here in Edmonton it is alright. Except for the river, since only a few roads bridge it. But once I learn those, getting around should be no problem at all! Now I just need more places to drive around to.

Calvin’s Spot

Calvin has been sitting for a while now, and it’s nice to be able to plop him into a high chair at restaurants and not worry about holding him and a fork and knife at the same time. Until now we haven’t had one at home, which wasn’t a problem until recently when he started eating. Sitting on the floor ain’t cuttin’ it. It’s hard to get a good spoon-to-mouth angle.

I’ve been looking around for a while for high chairs, but I am too picky. I don’t like those plush ones. I have enough laundry to do, never mind adding a high chair cover to it. Also, why would it need to recline? And as simple and easy to wipe down the IKEA ones are, they just aren’t my style. I’ve always liked the wooden one my mom has, and if she never had her grandchildren visit, I would’ve probably snuck it out of her kitchen. And then I saw this one on Kijiji! It is perfect!

All wood, small scale, and doesn’t take up a lot of floor real estate. It love it, and it suits Calvin me so well, don’t you think?

Calvin and his avocado mouth thinks it’s just dandy!

And now he has his own spot at the table and can enjoy looking at our faces while we eat too, instead of our calves. Also, he likes to pretend the table is a bongo. Multi-use!

Not So Cold After All

This morning I had an appointment to go to, and before leaving I checked the weather. I knew it was quite cold from looking last night to see what Tim had to deal with while walking to the train station. Here is what the Weather Network said around 10 AM today:

Please notice the “feels like” temperature.

Looking out the window, it is very deceiving because the sunshine makes it look so nice! I had texted Tim to see how his walk went, and he said he only got a bit cold when he was stopped and cross walks. And when I went out to scrape the car before leaving, I was pleasantly surprised that what is supposed to feel like -14 actually feels more like a +2.

I was told that cold here feels way different than cold back on the coast, and now I can say it is totally true! Also, if it is any kind of negative temperature on the coast, you can bet your socks that there is a bunch of ice lying around just waiting to slip you up. Not here!

Bring it on, winter!

The Great Church Hunt

I don’t have very much experience with different churches. I attended the same one since I was a month old until I was 21 and moved to Victoria. Even in Victoria, I didn’t search for one to suit me. I just went to the one my room mate went to, and it worked for me. We know a couple people here, but have yet to attend the churches they go to. We have stuck to ones close to our house so far.

Last week we went to The Mosaic House, is a new church plant of the CRC denomination. It is a relatively young crowd, and probably no more than 75 people. It is quite multicultural and they have a lunch after the service every week. Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay for it because we had to meet our landlord, but there were a handful of people who introduced themselves to us, and it was a friendly crowd.

This morning we went to Southgate Alliance Church. The demographic is older, quite similar to Oaklands where we attended in Victoria. But there were families with young children as well. Since it is an older, established church, there are set programs and things throughout the week which would be great for getting to know people there.

We will probably revisit one, if not both, because it’s hard to get a feeling of a church by going just once, but I will probably try out a program or two at the Alliance church. It is within walking distance, and it would be great to have people to hang out with while Tim is at work. So far I have yet to leave the house except to go grocery shopping or to the dr.’s office. Like I said in my very first post,  I don’t find many reasons to go out and do things and have fun around town. Having somewhere to go every week would help with that.

There are lots of other churches we could try too and I will probably feel a little unsettled until we decide on one to be home. I am not used to this!

Have you ever had to church “shop”? How do you decide where to attend?

Help Me Garden

I have never gardened. I have never even owned a house plant until Amy gave me one when we moved here. The white flower is turning brown and the dirt is mouldy (sorry Amy). But I have wanted to garden for a while! That counts for something, right?

In my first place, the little bit of yard I had was north facing and under cedar trees. In the last place there were deer around all the time. But this place…

Beautiful, isn’t it?

It came with a garden!

Now I need all you experienced people to help me out. I’m pretty sure this needs to be cleared, but where do I go from there? And nothing really gets planted ’til the Spring, right? Here are a few more close up photos of what is there.

Lots of weeds and leaves. And extra containers for extra stuff.

If these were alive, Calvin would love them.

Were these perhaps once sweat peas? I love sweat peas!

I don’t know how long we will live here, but it would be nice to have something to work on next year. Learn some new skills and all that.

Give me your know-how! Please!

Using What I’ve Been Given

Kitchens are always the most interesting part of a house, I think. Especially in rentals. A renter can’t easily change a kitchen around to suit their needs like they can in a bathroom or bedroom by simply adding shelves or a dresser. In every house I have rented in, the kitchen has had the most things that make me go “I would change this if I owned this place”.

In this house, what I was given for a pantry was a simple 5-shelf bookshelf. When we were unpacking the kitchen boxes, we threw all the food items onto/around it. All the cupboard space was taken up with dishes, so I had just the bookshelf to work with. You can see that absolutely nothing has been organized. The Pam is neighbours with the Corn Flakes and the peanut butter is next to the Worcestershire sauce. Yum.

It took me longer than necessary to organize, but I like taking my time when tidying because I enjoy it and I don’t want it to ever end! But here is is after. One of the best kitchen inventions I have ever seen is those shelf hangy things (found at Home Outfitters) because who likes empty space above their items on a shelf? Not me! Everything needs to fit perfectly.

And that’s my pantry!

Pretty soon the rest of my house will be tidy enough to do a full house tour. Stay tuned!

Do you have any favourite pantry organizing tips?

Half a Year Old

This was us 6 months ago:

Calvin was a little 7lb 2oz newborn. Now he is somewhere well over 20lbs! October 13 marked half a year of him being in our lives, which is pretty crazy! He is a happy boy learning new things all the time. Some of his most recent accomplishments are:

– He can go from sitting to on his tummy in 2 seconds.

Gonna crawl soon?

– He can say “mamamama”. He never stops after just 2 syllables.

– He won a blue ribbon for his toe jam.

– He is getting better at sleeping through more of the night. And sometimes he sleeps in funny positions.

Of course the flash from the first photo woke him up, but this is how I found him sleeping!

– Sitting on Daddy’s shoulders is the one thing he has enjoyed for the longest amount of time. Everything else he enjoys comes and goes too quickly.

– And his biggest accomplishment, but by far the easiest, is being our most favourite little boy ever!

I thought it would be fun to make a half a birthday cake, so I did! Tim thought it was “Really really really really good. Really good.” I used the recipe from Mennonite Girls Can Cook, but I halved the recipe.

A half a cake is a wonderful idea when there are only 2 of you to enjoy it!

We are looking forward to the next half a year when there is so much more for Calvin to learn. It’s gonna be fun!
